5 Trailer Tips During Winter

When winter rolls in, it brings challenges for anyone using trailers in cold weather. Whether you’re using it for personal use or you are a contractor, mover, or small business owner relying on your trailer, it is essential to keep your equipment in top shape during the colder months. Follow this guide to ensure your trailer is ready for the winter season.

1. Inspect and Prepare Your Tires

Cold weather causes the tire’s pressure to drop, which can lead to uneven wear or blowouts. For every 10° F drop in temperature, tires drop about 1 pound per square inch (PSI). Here’s what to do to avoid tire wear:

  • Check Tire Pressure: Use a tire pressure gauge and ensure the pressure matches the manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Inspect Tread Depth: Ensure your tires have adequate tread to maintain traction on icy or snowy roads.
  • Consider Winter Tires: If you frequently drive in snow or icy conditions, swapping to winter-specific tires may be a good investment.

2. Prevent Rust and Corrosion

Winter weather means exposure to snow, ice, and road salt, all of which can accelerate rust and corrosion.

  • Clean the Trailer: Wash your trailer thoroughly to remove dirt, salt, and grime. Pay attention to the undercarriage.
  • Apply Protective Coatings: Use a rust-inhibitor spray or wax coating to shield metal surfaces.
  • Check Fasteners: Inspect bolts, nuts, and hinges for signs of rust and replace as needed.

3. Lubricate Moving Parts

Cold temperatures can cause metal parts to stiffen, making operation more difficult.

  • Use Cold-Weather Lubricants: Apply grease or oil rated for low temperatures to hinges, locks, and other moving parts.
  • Check Suspension Components: Ensure springs and axles are adequately lubricated and free of ice buildup.

4. Store Your Trailer Properly

If you don’t plan to use your trailer regularly during the winter, proper storage is key.

  • Choose a Covered Location: Store your trailer in a garage, carport, or under a weather-resistant cover to shield it from snow and ice.
  • Tire Cushions: When storing a trailer, use tire cushions to prevent flat spots on the tires. You can find them online or at an auto parts store.
  • Disconnect the Battery: If your trailer has a battery, disconnect it to prevent it from draining during storage.

5. Plan for Safety on the Road

Winter hauling requires extra precautions to stay safe on icy or snowy roads.

  • Carry Emergency Supplies: Include items like tire chains, a shovel, a tow strap, and a bag of sand or kitty litter for added traction.
  • Drive Cautiously: Adjust your speed and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.
  • Check the Weather: Always review forecasts and road conditions before setting out.

Following these winter tips for your trailer ensures it performs reliably, protects your investment, and keeps you safe on the road. Whether you’re storing your trailer for the winter or continuing to use it for daily operations, these steps will help you navigate the cold weather with ease.
